Cheerson CX-10 Nano Quadcopter
The Cheerson CX-10 Nano Quadcopter has a little distinction. It is the tiniest quadcopter ever constructed. It is a recreational quadcopter that you can ride around for fun but it is also good for beginners learning how to fly a drone. Costing under $18, it is probably also the cheapest quadcopter drone ever built. The drone has impressive aesthetics and offers multiple modes of flight that many avid flyers will appreciate.
The CX-10 is fairly easy to use and is also one of the coolest looking drones out there, coming in a variety of brilliant colours. In spite of its relatively tiny size, it still offers pretty good functions and you can use to do some crazy acrobatic turns and flips with simple controls. It offers users incredible firepower and a relatively good flight time ranging from 5 to 7 minutes. It is equipped with a 3.7V 100mAH lithium ion battery which is also rechargeable. This offers sufficient firepower to all the four rotors on the quadcopter giving it very good lift and great speed. The lithium ion provides sufficient charge to fly the drone at an impressive speed and also do acrobatic flips along the way and can be recharged in a fairly short time period, ranging from 15 to 30 minutes.
Main Features of the Drone

An Overview of the Cheerson CX-10 Drone
The drone is manufactured by the Chinese company Cheerson, one of the leading manufacturers for hobby drones. The brand has gained a reputation for its high quality and affordable hobby drones and the CX-10 does not disappoint. It is a great starter quad but can also make for good hobbyist flying. This tiny quadcopter is also one of the cheapest in the market, costing on average only $18. If you are beginner, you can fly this drone freely without worrying about crashing it and feeling the pinch of having to replace a costly drone. In fact, you can purchase multiple CX-10 drones without feeling the pinch.
The Cheerson CX-10 has been designed with exquisite workmanship. You will definitely appreciate the elegant and smooth flowing design and aesthetics. The colour painting is of very high quality with a choice of some brilliant colours. The drone offers an all-round beautiful display product texture.
One thing you will notice about the CX-drones, apart from their itty-bitty sizes, is the array of rich colours that they come in. You can find them in bright pink, orange, green or blue colours. Each of the CX-10 quadcopters also comes in a similarly coloured transmitter making for a colourful flight experience.
Flight Time and Charging Time
The CX-10 has a flight time of only 5 to 7 minutes on a single charge cycle. The drone uses a 3.7V 100mAh Lithium ion battery that takes about 20 to 30 minutes to charge. Included in the package is a USB charger that you will use to recharge the battery. The USB cable will light up to indicate that the battery is currently charging and it goes off when the drone battery is fully charged. If you are worried about the incredibly short flight times, you can buy more of the CX-10s. After all, they cost only $18 so you can have them in multiple colours and use them to have a more enjoyable flight time beyond the 5 to 7 limitation.
Make sure you always use USB charger that comes with the drone to charge the drone battery. Don’t use the ordinary wall chargers for smartphones and tablets as they are likely to damage the delicate Lithium ion batteries. Also, when charging your quadcopter battery, make sure you check it out often and unplug the USB charger once it is fully charged. Don’t leave it plugged to the charger for longer than is necessary as the lithium ion battery may burst into fire when they overcharge. It will generally charge fully in only 20 to 30 minutes. You will know the quadcopter battery is fully charged when the LED light on the USB charging cable goes off.
The Cheerson CX-10 comes in three different flight modes that you can operate it in. You can adjust to a preferred flight mode depending on your level of experience. These flight modes include the Beginner Mode, the Intermediate Mode and the Advanced Mode.
With the Advanced Mode, you will be able to fly the drone at a much faster speed. However, this mode is also a little bit more sensitive so it is recommended that you switch on to the Advanced Mode only after you have honed your flying skills and are comfortable at the controls. The Beginner Mode has the lowest sensitivity which means it is also the least manoeuvrability. The upside is that gives you enough room to fly the drone comfortably without out of control movements that are likely to crash the drone. If you are just learning how to fly a drone, you should start with this mode.
The CX-10 Drone Controller
The CX-10 is a very tiny drone so it is no surprise that the transmitter is bigger than the quadcopter in size. The transmitter has a very simple and intuitive design consisting of a power button, sensitivity adjustors and two analog sticks. In order to activate the drone, you must move the transmitter in a Down, Up and Down sequence. This sequence must be done every time you are powering on the drone.
The transmitter offers not just a smooth functionality but it is also beautifully and ergonomically designed. It is easy to operate and fits comfortably in your palms. The transmitter is powered by two AAA batteries (1V) and these must be purchased separately as they do not come as part of the package. The transmitter is not as rugged so do not drop it as it is fairly fragile.
The transmitter is a 2.4GHz RC with excellent diffraction capability. You can use it to exert long range control of the drone; it has an effective range of between 20m and 50m. It also has good frequency hopping and you can use it to exert control over the drone even when flying around obstacles.
The Cheerson CX-10 can also be fitted with propeller guards to offer it extra protection during landing. These will reduce the costs of having to constantly replace the props due to damages. However, the prop guards do not come with the package; they must be purchased as separate units.
If you are beginner, it is recommended that you fit the CX-10 quad with the prop guards in order to ensure their durability as you are likely to fly your drone into obstacles a few times which will shorten their lifespan. However, fitting the prop guards adds an extra weight on the drone and will result in shorter flight times. It is also advisable to buy extra propellers just in case you damage your current props. The prop guards will give you sufficient protection but if you crash your multirotor often, the propellers are eventually going to get damaged.
The LED lighting is a very important feature in the CX-10 quadcopter. Every motor on the Cheerson CX-10 Nano Quadcopter has an LED light installed. The two front motors have a blue LED installed while the two motors at the back have a red LED bulb installed. The LED lights are useful for giving you a quick orientation of the drone when you are flying it at very high speeds. The lights also provide a nice and colourful effect when you are flying the drone at night or in low lighting which makes the experience fun.
The CX-10 quad should be powered on a surface that is a flat and level. When powering on the transmitter, check to make sure that the left hand stick of the controller is at the bottom or down. Once the transmitter and the quad are on, move the left hand control stick fully up and then fully down. That action will trigger various beeping sounds. After you have completed the left control stick movements of up-down-up, the four lights on the quad should be giving a steady light flash instead of blinking. When the light flash is constant, the quadcopter is now ready for the launch.
Flying the Quadcopter: All quadcopters are built with the front part and the back end. In the Cheerson CX-10, the front end of the quad has blue LED lighting while the back end of the quad has red LEDs. The ON and OFF switch is also situated on the back of the quad.
You can move the Cheerson CX-10 quad in a left, right or backward direction by using the right-hand control stick. You can also control the throttle in an up and down direction by using the left-hand control stick on the CX-10 transmitter controls. This control also executes the yaw movement for manoeuvring the quadcopter through rotations.
The CX-10 does not have a headless mode so you must always ensure that you are facing the direction of the quad’s forward as its movements will be from the quad perspective. This will enable you to keep track of the quad’s back and forward. The blue LED light, indicating the quad forward, should guide you on the direction to face. This can be limiting when you are executing yaw movements or if the quad goes out of the range. However, the CX-10 has a very small range of only 20m to 50m anyway.
The CX-10 Throttle is very sensitive, especially if you are flying it in the Advanced Mode. If you are still not used to the controls, try to touch them softly to maintain control of the quad. Beginners should fly the quad in the Beginner Mode. Once you have mastered flight, you can graduate to the Intermediate and then the Advanced Mode and fly the quad a little more aggressively.
If you are losing control of the quad in flight, lower the throttle down totally in order to shut off the power in the motors. In extreme circumstances, it is better to crash your quad than let it fly into the distance and get lost.
Executing Flips: If you are feeling confident enough at the controls, you can start executing the flips by pushing the transmitter’s right hand stick in. Push it in the way you would push a button. The drone will give a beeping sound which is a signal that it is ready to do the flips. Finally, push the right hand stick in any of the four directions-left, right, forward, back- in order to make the tiny quad to flip in that particular direction. When flipping your quad, ensure you are at a safe distance from it as the quad might crash on you when it suddenly loses altitude and moves sharply.
Changing the Props: Please keep in mind that the props are not similar and you must pair them correctly. They are counter-rotating and if you don’t match the blades, the quad will simply not take off the ground. There are props which should be used for counter-clockwise motion and those meant for clockwise motion. If you use a prop in the wrong place, they will not generate lift so care should be taken when replacing the props.
The props have unique labels underneath them as follows: A1, A2, B1 and B2. The letters “A” and “B” indicate the direction the propeller rotates in i.e. whether clockwise or anticlockwise. An “A” label indicates a forward blade while a “B” blade indicates an inverted blade. Sometimes, the blade may also be marked with an “R” which indicates that it is a forward blade. The inverted blades do not have the “R” marking. If you are changing propeller, be sure to replace it with one that is marked with a similar letter. For example, if you are replacing an A1 propeller, do it with a prop that is marked A1 or A2.
The props should be attached to the motors correctly otherwise they will not spin and the drone will not take off the ground. If a blade is not spinning, check out its tightness or remove it entirely and determine if the motor is working well. Sometimes, the motor may not work because the gear has not been connected correctly.
Gyro Callibration: There are instances when you may need to recalibrate the gyroscope such as when some blades are spinning at a slower speed than others. The gyroscope can be recalibrated automatically or manually. To do it automatically, simply switch off the power on the quad, place it on a flat and level surface and then switch the power on. Wait a few seconds and then fly the drone again.
You can also do it manually when the quad is switched on. Put it on a level and flat surface and then move the left and control stick to the bottom left. Then move the right hand control stick onto the upper left corner of the controller. Hold both control sticks in these positions for a period of at least four seconds. The quad lights should begin blinking fast and the quad will be calibrated.
This mini drone offers a mind blowing performance. The price, ranging from $16 to $18 is simply unbeatable. If you are just starting out on your drone hobby, you can purchase the Cheerson CX-10 Nano Quadcopter and then later on, you can upgrade to a more serious drone with superior performance features.
The controller is excellent, offering flyers 3 flight modes that they can pick from based on their experience and flight preferences. These are the Beginner Mode, Intermediate Mode and the Advanced Mode. You can instantly change these three modes with relative ease.
The manufacturer lists an effective range of 50m although some users have reported flying it beyond that range. However, you should watch out as the transmitter link is likely to be broken when it goes out of range and you will need to reactivate the drone to reconnect the link. If the drone is out of range and flying horizontally, it will simply drop to the ground.
The CX-10 has a flight time ranging from 5 to 7 minutes which is satisfactory for a drone of its class although in practical flight, the shorter flight time will likely ruin it for you. Since they cost less than $18 on average, it wouldn’t hurt to buy a few extra CX-10 drones that will allow you to fly for an extended period of time without the long recharging interruptions. As the battery is about to be depleted, the drone’s running flights will begin to flash and you will have only 15 seconds to land the drone without crashing it. After the battery charge is depleted, the drone will no longer respond to the transmitter commands.
The Cheerson CX-10 is a little rugged beast in spite of its elegant build. It can take a good beating before it is completely damaged. You might crash it a few times and it will continue running.
If you are looking for a very affordable and impressive beginner drone, this will definitely be a good investment. It contains all the right functions to help you hone your flying skills and it performs incredibly well. You can use it for regular drone flights and even some aggressive flips and turns. It makes for an awesome hobbyist drone but it is also perfect for those shopping for an affordable entry-level drone.
Cheerson has another great drone that you may want to check out. The Cheerson CX 20 is a midprice drone, a perfect quadcopter for beginners to gain a valuable learning experience.
