Drones with Camera

As new technologies are introduced, there are more ways to explore the world around us. Something that is growing in popularity is the use of drones. Drones can be used simply to fly as a hobby on your days off or they can be used to capture beautiful videos and photographs in angles that you could not reach before. A feature that many drone manufacturers have found to be wildly in demand are cameras; whether for photos, videos, or both. The ability to take pictures and videos to see exactly what the drone is seeing at that time has become an amazing and sought after craft. It has allowed us to explore more areas than ever before. Of course, you could walk around an area on foot, but it is also very appealing to see that view from up high. Not everyone has the ability to fly a plane, but drones give you the opportunity to still have that experience of seeing something with a bird's eye view.

Drones come in many varieties. There are drones that you can buy for your children, or if you are not serious about drone flying, that are more simple and could be compared to a more expensive toy. They are going to be lower in price and quality compared to the professional drones with both the drone's build and the camera. The professional drones are going to give you a much wider variety of features, cost more, and have better build quality. The most costly drones typically feature cameras that are going to take professional grade photos and videos. This list is a compilation of the many different drones that are available currently that have a camera featured or the ability to attach a camera to it. They are going to vary in quality and price so you are able to choose the one that works best for your desires and price point.

Terms to Know

The first most basic term with drones is FPV. FPV is the first person view. This can also be recognized as the RPV or the remote person view. Meaning this is the view of the operator of the drone typically through a live feed. Some people just call this video piloting because you are using the camera as a guide instead of watching the drone itself to see where you are flying. When steering a drone the pilot is using a radio controller to move the drone. Typically the live streaming image is transmitted to a screen on the controller, FPV goggles, or a monitor so the pilot can see where they are going.

Many drones use an action camera. This means that the camera is specifically made for filming high paced situations while being in the middle of the action. This can mean that the camera and drone is going to get dirty, hit, or otherwise jostled around. Action cameras or cams are made to handle this type of treatment without breaking by having a more compact design, being more durable, and sometimes even waterproof.

A gimbal is what allows the pilot of a drone with a camera to capture images that are more clear. It is a support for an object that is able to pivot. This means that it is able to rotate the object around the immobile axis. With a drone this is specifically for the camera to take pictures or videos. It can vary in size as they are used for smaller camera lenses to a big photographic telescope. If it is a more expensive drone the camera may be on a gimbal that allows for the camera to move separate from the drone without showing any vibrations from being in flight.

Something that is a concern for many people that are looking to get a good image is the jello effect. Whether you know the term of not. This occurs when there is a movement referred to as a quick pan that can make the image you are viewing seem to shift much like jello. This can also be cause by the sun when it creates a shadow off the propellers of the drone. With this shift in the image they can often become blurry and lines that should appear to be straight will appear to be curved or warped.

$0 to $100

Our first category falls in the section of drone you would find fit for either a child or someone that infrequently flies. They are going to be great for anyone that would like to try out drone flying without the major financial commitment some of the bigger models bring. They do not have as many features as some of the drones on the market, but they are able to perform the job they set out to do. Most have a camera or camera adaption available. The camera are going to be of average quality.

The durability of this drones can be decent but I would make sure you are not coming in for too many crash landings. The time you are able to fly these drones is going to be greatly diminished compared to the expensive models. Many of them will spend more time charging than in flight. The drones in this category were picked because they do have better quality than other drones that are this low in price.

UDI U818A-1

This drone is going to be a great product to start your journey of flying with. It has been able to keep its price lower, but still give good quality images. This drone is a quadcopter and has a HD camera that is an updated model of the U818A. If you are looking for a HD camera option at a low price this is going to be the best drone for you. UDI U818A-1

With a camera that provides images of such good quality the company did need to bring the price down in other areas. You are going to be able to control this drone for about 30 meters which is much less than other drones that are on the market. Even with this shorted flight length you are still going to be able to travel a decent distance to capture videos and pictures of good quality. There is a flight duration from about four minutes to six minutes. The battery that powers this drone is a 500mAh Li-Po battery that is 3.7V. The remote controller that comes with the drone has a 2.4GHz frequency.

JJRC H16 Tarantula X6

This is an impressive device for the price point it is in. When you are looking to get this drone you are going to find that there are different package versions each having varying differences in quality of cameras. The one that is the best for the price you pay has a wide 5MP camera. One of the most impressive parts about this drone is that it has a control distance of 300 meters which is a giant leap from our last drone. This distance is so much higher than others in this price range. It makes it ideal for those that want to use their drones for far distances without shelling out a lot of money. With the further distance there is also a longer flight time. You are able to get about eight to ten minutes of flight time before needing to recharge.

The camera that comes with this specific version is a wide angle camera. It does not have to be used however, because it is not built onto the device. If you just want to fly your drone or practice before you begin recording you are able to pull the camera off. When you are flying with the camera you will have no jello effect and the images it projects are very good.

There are a few different features with this drone as well. It has a 7.4V 1200mAh Li-Po 30C battery. Its remote has a 2.4GHz frequency. There is a feature like Return to Home which is a nice addition for a cheaper drone. There is also IOC which is intelligent orientation control. To put it simply this is going to act like a compass for the drone. For the price of this product it has amazing flight distance and image quality while in flight.

Blomiky JXD 510G

This is another drone that has a good price point, but still gives you a wide variety for the features it includes. The control range for the drone is 100 meters which is decent with in this price range. You are able to use the Altitude Holder for the times you would like to take pictures or videos without being bothered with flying the drone. This screen is in the controller of the device so you are able to watch if there is too much jello effect occurring. There is also the ability to tilt the camera up to 20 degrees to capture the best angle.

Hubsan X4 H107C+

This is a smaller drone that is also the successor to the X4 H107C. With its smaller size you can use it outdoors as well as indoors. You are able to use this drone as a distance of up to 150 meters which is decent considering its size and price. There is about seven minutes of flight time. It's 3.7V 520mAh Li-Po battery can be charged in a matter of 30 minutes which is much less time than many drones available. A quick charging time means more time flying and less time waiting for a battery to be at full capacity.

Hubsan X4 H107C+

There are a few features to the 2 MP camera that shoots at 720p resolution. The camera is built into the drone so you will not be able to swap it out. You will be able to use the Altitude Holder feature as well as the Headless Mode. Headless Mode makes it easier for the pilot to orient themselves from any direction from which the drone is pointing. All of these features come together to make a mini drone that has become very popular because of its low cost.

Kai Deng K70C Sky Warrior

This drone has a decent quality camera for its price. It is a 2M Hawkeye camera with 720p resolution that will get the job done if you want to use it. The real selling point of this drone is that it is compatible with many action cameras that are on the market. You are able to remove the Hawkeye camera and connect the camera you already own to the drone. It works amazingly with a GoPro. Meaning you can pair a very cheap drone with a camera that is going to give you amazing results. You do not need to shell out a lot of money to purchase a drone with a camera that has similar features of a GoPro. Instead just stick your existing one onto this drone that is modified to hold them specifically.

The drone itself flies very smooth with a 2.4GHz Frequency remote that has 4 channels. You will be about to control this drone for up to 200 meters and it has a flight time of about ten minutes. The battery is a 7.4V 200mAh Li-Po battery. There are LED lights on the drone so you are still able to fly it at night and see where it is at. $100 to $300

A small step above the drones that are under a hundred dollars. If you want a drone that is a bit more durable than one you could buy off the shelf at a department store these would be the ones to shoot for. They are not going to have all of the features you would find in the higher price points, but they are still going to have camera that give you decent photos and videos. These are still great drones for beginners to the trade. You do not have to spend too much money and they are going to last a bit longer.

Hubsan H502S

This drone is going to be one of the few that is ready to fly right out of the box there is not need to wait around for it to charge or update. It has a decent price for the quality you are getting. The camera it is equipped with is a 2MP camera that is able to record videos and take pictures at 720p resolution. The H502S is able to use FPV. There is not charging of the 7.4V 2000mAh Li-Po Battery. You will be able to grab the remote and go. Many drones do need software updates out of the box if they are older models, but you are able to skip this step with drones that are in lower price fields because their software is not typically updatable.

JJRC H26D

This drone is going to be one of the first we see with a camera of such high quality at a lower price. It has a 3MP camera that is included. Parrot AR 2.0

The Parrot AR Drone 2.0 Elite is a special drone in the terms of the remote control. You will no longer need to carry around a remote control because it is actually controlled by your existing smart phone or tablet. This drone is able to use a WiFi connection to fly. You simply install an app called FreeFlight onto your desired “remote” and off you fly. This app is going to act as your live feed of what your drone is recording as well. The app will allow you to see what the drones speed is, the battery level, and your altitude so you will always know exactly where your drone is at in flight. With the app you are able to use it as a typical remote or you are able to use what is called Director Mode. While using Director Mode you are going to program the drones movements before you are flying. This going to to allow the drone to automatically fly itself while you concentrate on the pictures or videos you are taking.

This drone also comes in a variety of finishes. You are going to be able to choose from designs called Snow, Sand, or Jungle depending on your personal style and the location you are using your drone in. It does not have a 3MP camera instead it is a 2MP. The live feed is transmitted directly to your smart phone through an app by using WiFi. You are able to watch the video via your smart phone as you fly with the 2.5GHz Frequency remote. You will be able to fly for about seven minutes for up to 300 meters. You still have the multiple angel control 2 Axis gimbal. The battery that is included is a 7.4V 1200mAh 30C Li-Po battery. The main difference is in the way the cameras record. They are very similar drones otherwise.

JJRC H26W

Syma X8HG

The Syma X8HG has a much shorter flight range than other drones on this list. You are going to be able to travel for about 70 meters for up to 7 minutes. The appeal of this drone lies in its camera. The camera is not built in and can be swapped out for other cameras that you currently own. The camera I am going to focus on is one that has the best quality. You are able to get a 8MP HD FPV camera that is able to record at 720p resolution. This camera does give a slight jello effect while you fly. You are able to download an app onto your smart phone in which you connect to the drone with WiFi. This app allows you to follow the camera in FPV to see the live stream. The camera is produce by the Syma company and is comparable to other lower cost action cameras that are on the market.

The drone does come with features like Headless Mode and the Altitude Holder or Barometer Set Height. This allows you to choose that height you want to hover at to allow you to focus on the photography aspect of the drone. This drone is fly by using a 2.5GHz Frequency remote. It has a 7.4 2000mAh Li-Po battery.

JJRC H25G

This drone focuses on trying to give the best possible view to the pilot possible. The quadcopter is able to transmit its live feed via FPV to a LCD monitor. This monitor is located on the RC controller that runs at a 5.8GHz Frequency. This monitor is very appealing because you are able to adjust the screen's brightness as needed. While flying it can often be hard to see where you are going if you are using a screen in too bright of sunlight. With this screen you are going to be able to rectify this problem no matter how sunny it is.

The camera is installed onto a mount that is able to absorb vibrations. This mount has four dumping balls that help to reduce the jello effect as you fly, giving a much more clear image. The camera itself is 2MP and records at 720p resolution. You are able to change the angle of the camera either up or down before you begin flight. The drone is able to flight for up to ten minutes and will travel about 200 meters. It does have the features of One Key Return and Headless Mode. It runs off a 2S 7.3V 1800mAh Li-Po battery.

JJRC H25G

$300 to $500

The next step up for drones falls into this category. This is going to be the middle ground between beginning and advanced flying. Anyone that has spend a good deal of time with a cheaper drone might be looking to change to this price point. You are going to typically see a jump in the time you are able to spend with these drones in the air and the quality of your camera is going to increase. There are usually going to be a few more features in this price point that make it easier to record and take pictures. The price of these drones are still low enough that even beginners might jump right into this category without too much regret if they do not continue their flying career. Anyone that wants to begin taking professional pictures might need to bump up to the next category to get the best quality available.

You are going to get about twelve minutes of flight time from its dual Lithium Polymer batteries.

The five different flight modes that you are able to access include Pilot, Selfie, Orbit, Follow me, and Journey. Pilot mode is self explanatory, it is the mode in which you are going to use the remote to control the drone as well as the camera. This is the typical mode you have a drone in. In Selfie mode you are going to use sliders to adjust your drones position. It will have the ability to change the altitude, position, and distance by using these different sliders. Orbit mode allows you to choose an object or person for the drone to orbit around. After you choose what the drone is going to orbit you are able to choose if it is orbiting right or left and you are able to pause the orbit whenever needed.

There is the typical Follow Me mode that is going to allow you to fly your drone to where you would like it to follow from. Then you can set the position and allow it to change its movements and follow you. With Journey Mode the drone uses the Selfie mode sliders to position the drone. Then you are able to change the camera angle that the drone is going to fly at. This drone is able to fly at eleven mph.
